Playland is a powerful allegory, set in a travelling amusement park encamped on the outskirts of a town in the Karoo. On New Year's Eve 1989, two young men - a young white returnee from the Border and a black night watchman - meet accidentally. They talk about overcoming their differences and working towards reconciliation and peace.
The book also contains Fugard's address to graduates at the Arts Faculty Graduation Ceremony at the University of the Witwatersrand in March 1990 at which he received an Honorary Degree, and extracts from a talk to students at Rhodes University in 1991 in which the playwright offers some valuable personal insights into his creativity and his approach to his work.
