FAQ

How do I determine the value of gold/silver?
You can determine market value by comparing an item to what similar items sell for.  The market value is what a willing buyer is prepared to pay for an item from a willing seller.  You may however get a good idea of an items value by calculating it's spot value as most items are priced relative to this price.  The spot price is the price payed for refined gold or silver on international commodity markets in quantities of 100oz and 5000oz for silver (5 x 32kg bars).  The calculation is as follows:

weight x spot price = spot value

e.g. 0.5oz x R266.20/oz = R133.10

If you first calculate the spot price of any precious metals you buy, by comparing the price you paid (market price) to the spot price, you'll get an idea whether you paying too much or too little.  The spot price is available in rands at www.goldprice.org.

How do I convert between troy ounces and grams?
Precious metals are traditionally priced in troy ounces.  A troy ounce is 31.1034768g, but 31.1g should be accurate enough for most.

15g / 31.1g/oz = 0.48oz (Silver R1 coin/gross weight)

How do I account for alloys of gold and silver
Sterling silver is 92.5% (.925) silver with copper.
A Krugerrand is 22k gold (22 parts out of 24) or 91.67%
To get the weight of pure silver, multiple your weight by the percentage of precious metal:

e.g. 300g x .925 = 277.5g (sterling silver)

33.9g x 91.67% = 31.1g pure gold (1oz) contained in a Krugerrand

Spot value of an old 80% pre-1970 R1 coin:

(15g x 0.800 x R266/oz) / 31.1g/oz= R102.64
