EACH PIECE IS MADE WITH EARTHENWARE CLAY, GLAZED, HAND PAINTED AND FIRED BY HAND AT A WHOPPING ONE THOUSAND DEGREES. The signature is lacquered with color on the base of the pottery. Unofficially dubbed the Bug Eyes range by collectors, this colourful, naturalistic designs feature floral designs in a whole rainbow of hues.
 
Poole pottery artwork are highly collectable, with pieces finding their way into the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, as well as being sold in high-end shops like Harrods and Tiffanys.
 
MARKINGS: Except for the earliest of pieces, all examples of Poole Pottery is stamped or marked on their base with Poole, England. The mark is often accompanied by a dolphin logo.
 
POOLE POTTERY (1873-present):
Poole Pottery is a British pottery brand. The name is now a brand, owned by Denby, with the products made in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. As a manufacturer, it was founded in 1873 on Poole quayside in Dorset, where it continued to produce pottery before moving its factory operations away from the quay in 1999.
Carter and Co. was founded in 1873 on Pooles quayside and later renamed Poole Pottery. Its craftspeople began hand making artworks influenced in the 1920s by Mediterranean peasant art mainly featuring floral and animal motifs.
These became more angular and abstract during the 1930s, as Poole potters were inspired by the booming Art Deco movement.
 
LIVING GLAZE:
Glazing is the process of using an impervious layer of a vitreous substance, which will fuse to the body of the pieces. It can be used to decorate, color, and waterproof an item. Poole Pottery giftware is currently created using "Living Glaze". This involves the application of different glazes which react with one another to achieve unique results on each piece.
