Richard Boon. 2010, second edition. Soft cover (plastic sleeve) ; 626 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. Over 1kg

This is a fully revised edition of the best seller TREES OF NATAL, ZULULAND AND TRANSKEI (1993, 4th Edition).  It is a compact, yet amazingly extensive guide describing all the indigenous trees, shrubs and woody climbers found from East London in the Eastern Cape to Swaziland, north of KwaZulu-Natal.  This is the second  richest flora region in Africa.  The field guide is also a useful reference for those interested in woody plants throughout southern Africa.

Richard Boon is responsible for all updating (research, photography, mapping and rewriting) of the successful original book by Elsa Pooley. The 625 pages of this new edition contain:

  • Accounts for 1100  species including most woody invasive alien species
  • Almost an entirely new set of photographs
  • Family and genus descriptions
  • Informative text facing the colour plates
  • Leaf line drawings
  • Flowering and fruiting seasons shown in flower and fruit side bars
  • Colour distribution maps
  • A new key and text which highlights diagnostic features
  • Ecological, gardening, medicinal and other uses notes
  • Scientific names and their derivations as well as English, Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa and Tonga names

The nine introductory pages provide a short and simplified description and photographs of some of the plant communities in the region in which woody vegetation is a significant component.
