Porcelain 'Milk-Maid' figurine, possibly 1890-1910 Ref. Nov100
A lovely figurine of a milk-maid, dressed in a typical 18th Century outfit. She is in very good condition with just a few, slight chips to the petals of the rose she is holding and a small chip to the petal of the rose by her feet. No further chips, cracks nor bruises. She is difficult to identify as far as age is concerned. This is a 'slip' casting and this method was known way back in the early 1800, BUT was not really used commercially until the later 1880's onwards. There is no indication of a factory nor country mark which was usual for this period although, by now, many companies has their marks. So, although I believe she is from the late 1890-1910 era, I cannot be sure.
Now look at the painting, yes, all hand-painted, and very well done, with subtle colors and with great attention to detail. Many imported figurines show rather garish colors, strong reds, blues etc being the norm. She is painted all the way around which will indicate quality. There is no smudging, all the dots and lines on her dress are precisely placed. The painting of the face is always a good indicator of quality. Here the painting is perfect, the eyes, eyebrows and lips have been painted with great care and attention - and, painting a small face takes an expert. I think she could be either Italian or German in origin, but, your guess is as good as mine.
The 'Milk Maid' stands 21cm high with a diameter of 8.5 cm at the base. As mentioned, she remains in very good condition with virtually no damage.
I believe this is a genuine antique. Please remember the classification of an 'antique' is that it should be 100 years old, OR MORE. There are many articles being offered as 'antiques' when, clearly, they are not.
