ON AUCTION IS A ONE OF A KIND RAKU GLAZED AFRICAN BUFFALO MADE BY PORCUPINE CERAMICS IN THE WESTERN CAPE. THIS BUFFALO IS 20CM LONG 13CM HIGH AND 15CM WIDE FROM HORN TIP TO HORN TIP. IT HAS AN IMPRESSED MARK PORCUPINE ON UNDERSIDE OF BELLY.
 
THIS GLAZED BODY OF THE SCULPTURE HAS A BLUISH COLOUR WITH A CRACKLED AFFECT CREATED BY THE RAPID COOLING IN THE RAKU PROCESS.

PORCUPINE CERAMICS:
Porcupine Ceramics began in 1994 as a small home pottery and has grown in size to occupy a large studio at The Mohair Mill in The Crags, Western Cape. Manufacturing hand crafted ceramic items inspired by the art and animals of Africa and using the ancient Japanese firing method of "Raku" to achieve an exciting crackled effect created by the rapid cooling of the glaze after being lifted out of an extremely hot, Gas fired, Outdoor Kiln, causing the glaze to shrink and stretch over the clay body, opening fine cracks that are defined by carbon infiltration absorbed while smoldering in a firepit, oxygen starved and smothered with wood shavings.

WHAT IS RAKU?:
Raku firing is an incredible ancient Japanese ceramics technique that has been used for centuries. Raku means pleasure or enjoyment.
In essence, Raku is when pots are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot, they are then placed in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust or newspaper easily. The reason for this is to starve the pot of oxygen, which gives the glaze a wonderful variety of colors. Pieces with no glaze (A glaze is a thin layer of liquid which is put on a piece of pottery and becomes hard and shiny when the pottery is heated in a very hot oven.) on them take the oxygen from the clay itself, meaning some areas will have a matte black coloring. Raku differs from normal firing, where the piece is removed from kiln after its cooled down slowly.
For potters, its an incredibly exciting technique, as theres always the anticipation of how each piece may turn out with so many different variables.
