A 9CT GOLD LAPEL BADGE MARKED EENDRA MAAKT MAGT FEATURING AN EAGLE SPREADING ITS WINGS ABOVE A CENTRAL DISC WHEREAPUN IS ENGRAVED A FARMER PLOWING A FIELD AND AN OXWAGON WITH A CENTRAL CROSS IN A SHIELD. IT HAS A BULLET SHAPED FASTENER TO FIT THROUGH A LAPEL BUTTON HOLE.
SOME OF MY FAMILY MEMBERS WERE PART OF THE OSSEWABRANDWAG AS I WAS TOLD SINCE I WAS A CHILD. THIS LAPEL BADGE I FOUND WITH SOME OF MY FAMILIES OTHER MEMOROBILIA. IT APPEARS TO BE AN OLD OSSEWABRANDWAG MEMBERSHIP LAPEL BADGE AS I WILL EXLAIN BELOW.
RESEMBLING OSSEWABRANDWAG EMBLEM AND BADGES: Resembling the Nazi War Eagle Emblem with subtle differences. The eagle is looking over its left wing while the Nazi eagle is looking over its right wing. Its has its wings in an downward position instead of straight horizontally. I have seen Ossewabrandwag membership lapel badges online (Insignia archives Warstore) with most having the wings straight but some are in the downward version. Most of the eagles look over its right wing but again some look over its left wing. As I understand most of these badges were individually made and there was no customised standard apart from having an Oxwagon symbol and Eagle on it. On the upper half of the circular part is a farmer plowing a field. On the lower half, an oxwagon. On a band, legend below: "EENDR MAAKT MAGT". Surmounting a central shield with cross symbol.
SIZE: 15MM x 15MM CIRCULAR DISK
CONDITION: THIS OLD PENDANT BELONGED TO AN FAMILY MEMBER. IT IS IN GOOD CONDITION.
OSSEWABRANDWAG (OXWAGON GUARD): The Ossewabrandwag (OB) was formed by Johannes Frederik Janse 'Hans' van Rensburg in 1938 to formally represent the increasing Afrikaner nationalism inspired by the Great Trek centenary celebrations. The Ossewabrandwag was established in commemoration of this Great Trek. Most of the migrants traveled in ox-drawn wagons, hence the groups name. During World War II, South Africa allied itself with Britain and the Allies against Nazi Germany. Partly due to the Afrikaner memories of British brutality in the Anglo-Boer War forty years earlier, the Ossewabrandwag refused to support and aid the British, and therefore chose to support Germany. By 1941 its membership had risen to approximately 350,000 while the South African army could only muster 137,000 volunteers to fight with the British in WW2. During the early years of World War II the Ossewabrandwag became more militaristic, creating an extreme right-wing paramilitary sub-group: Stormjaers modelled on the Nazi 'Brown Shirts'. During World War II the Stormjaers carried out sabotage within South Africa as a protest against Jan Smuts' United Party government, which was supporting the British. OB members were rounded up and placed in detention camps including the future prime ministers BJ Vorster, who was a Stormjaers 'general', and PW Botha. With the defeat of Germany in 1945 the Ossewabrandwag went underground, whilst its past members rose steadily in prominence in the Apartheid era government.
