The name Port Natal has been around since 1905. At that time it described a country house with a park-like garden. Fifteen years later, a psychiatric hospital was built on the site of the manor, bearing the same name. Port Natal was a psychiatric sanatorium where about eighty people could be nursed. The building consisted of a high central section with a turret where the treatment rooms were. The patients lived in both wings of the symmetrical building. All in all, Port Natal had a facade some eighty meters long.

During the Second World War, Port Natal first served as a shelter for evacuated German elderly people and later as a labor and penal camp. Russian prisoners of war were also housed there. In 1987 the building was demolished to make way for the Wilhelmina Hospital Assen, which had grown out of its coat on the Zuidersingel. Only the remains of the entrance gate remind us of Port Natal.
