Harare, officially Salisbury until 1982, is the capital and most populous city of Zimbabwe. The city proper has an area of 960.6 km2 and an estimated population of 1,606,000 in 2009, with 2,800,000 in its metropolitan area in 2006. Situated in north-eastern Zimbabwe in the country's Mashonaland region, Harare is a metropolitan province, which also incorporates the municipalities of Chitungwiza and Epworth. The city sits on a plateau at an elevation of 1,483 metres above sea level and its climate falls into the subtropical highland category.

The city was founded in 1890 by the Pioneer Column, a small military force of the British South Africa Company, and named Fort Salisbury after the UK Prime Minister Lord Salisbury. Company administrators demarcated the city and ran it until Southern Rhodesia achieved responsible government in 1923. Salisbury was thereafter the seat of the Southern Rhodesian (later Rhodesian) government and, between 1953–63, the capital of the Central African Federation. It retained the name Salisbury until 1982, when it was renamed Harare on the second anniversary of Zimbabwean independence from the United Kingdom.

Deltiology is the study and collection of postcards. Professor Randall Rhoades of Ashland, Ohio, coined a word in 1945 that became the accepted description of the study of picture postcards.
 
The following are picture postcard condition grades as generally accepted  as the standard for grading postcards.
 
M (Mint) Perfect card as it comes from printing press. No marks, bends or creases. No writing or postmark. A clean fresh card.
NM (Near Mint) Like mint, but very light aging or very slight discolouration from being in an album for many years.
EX (Excellent) Like mint with no bends or creases, nor rounded or blunt corners.. May be postally used or unused, with writing & postmark only on address side. A clean fresh card on picture side.
VG (Very Good) Corners may be just a bit blunt or rounded. Almost undetectable crease or bend that does not detract from overall appearance of picture side. May be writing or postally used on address side.
G (Good) Corners may be noticeably blunt or rounded with slight bends or creases. May be postally used or writing on address side. Possibly some light toning
AV (Average) Creases or bends more pronounced. May be writing in margins on picture side. Postmark may show through from address side but not on main portion of picture. Corners more rounded.
PR (Poor) Card is intact. Excess soil, stained, cancel may affect picture with writing on either side.
SF (Space Filler) Poor condition as above & may have corners torn or missing, breaks etc...
