perfectly pregnant (Karolyn van Zyl)
a unique exercise programme for expectant mothers
From the back cover:
"We have accepted for some time that the general health of a mother during pregnancy is of profound importance to the development of her baby, but it is only recently that we have come to realise that overall fitness during this time contributes to an easier delivery and to a sense of well-being and of relaxation which helps the mother to surmount so many of the strains which seem an inescapable part of the process.
The author, herself the mother of four children, has developed a method of exercise for those mothers who wish to retain their energy and vitality despite a bulging stomach. Carefully structured movements are provided which lighten the strain on the back, the source of so many aches and pains, improve the muscle tone in the stomach and pelvic region, discipline the flab underneath the arms, improve circulation in the legs and thereby reduce the possiblity of varicose veins, and generally promote vigour and feelings of confidence.
Hormonal changes accompany physical changes and a pregnant woman can be subject to swings of mood. Being perfectly pregnant combats the lethargy which can so often accrue and allows the expectant mother to arrive at labour with a postive self-image and to bounce back to normal life after her baby is born.
Karolyn van Zyl is a qualified teacher and a gymnastics coach and judge.
