A JAN SMUTS HANDWRITTEN LETTER, FROM THE TREASURY 20 MARCH 1914
A concerned Jan Smuts writes to Dr. Krause shortly after the LABOUR PARTY WINS THE TRANSVAAL MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS, and 2 Months after the National Party was formed. Below is also an image of a newspaper cutting the day after this letter was written
Letter reads as follows
My Dear Krause have I answered your last letter? I think so, and thanks for the you lent. My present purpose in writing to you is to find out your reading of the elections on the Rand. At Pretoria it is clear that civil Service grievances have divided the day for labour but at the Rand other factors of cause come into availabilty. Is the change temporary? - due to dependability? or was the why was the vote so small? I expected Smit to beat Kretuhauen. Please answer when you have a free moment
the letter does have some damage in the one side on the back, which has been patched up
A nice piece of South African history, from one of the most significant leaders, having been actively involved in the Boer War, WW I, WW II and stood as Prime Minister
The envelope is a free frank, with Treasury ink Stamp, and postmarked 20 March Cape Town.
