Prey on PS4 is a single-player, first-person, sci-fi immersive sim game that blends elements of action, role-playing, and stealth. 

Setting and Plot

The game takes place aboard the vast, open-world Talos I space station in orbit around Earth's moon in the year 2032. The player assumes the role of Morgan Yu, a human who has been a subject of research involving experimental, memory-altering neuromods. The station has been overrun by a hostile and enigmatic alien entity called the Typhon. As Morgan, you must navigate the dangerous station, uncover the truth behind the disaster, and make critical choices that affect the game's multiple endings. 

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Exploration and Interactivity: The game encourages deep exploration. The entire space station is accessible from the start, provided you find the right items or abilities, similar to a Metroidvania style. Nearly every object can be interacted with, collected, or broken down into raw materials using the crafting system.
  • Weapons and Abilities: Players use a variety of unique weapons and tools, such as a wrench for melee combat and the signature Gloo Cannon, which shoots instant-hardening foam. The Gloo Cannon is highly versatile, used to freeze enemies, put out fires, fix broken electrical conduits, and even create climbable platforms to reach hidden areas.
  • Neuromods and Customization: A key mechanic involves using Neuromods, a technology derived from studying the Typhon, to unlock new abilities in categories like Scientist, Engineer, and Security. These skill trees allow players to tailor their playstyle, for example, focusing on hacking terminals, repairing broken machinery, or enhancing physical prowess and combat skills.
  • Choices and Consequences: Player decisions, such as whether to help or kill survivors aboard the station, have a direct impact on the narrative and ultimately determine one of the game's several main endings. 

Tone and Atmosphere

The game is often compared to classic immersive sims like BioShock and System Shock. It is known for creating a tense, atmospheric experience where players often feel hunted. A specific enemy type has the ability to mimic everyday objects (like a coffee cup or a chair), a mechanic that famously makes players paranoid about the environment. The game is a content-heavy experience that emphasizes problem-solving and flexibility in how players approach challenges.
