Prickly Pears & Pomegranates: Local, Organic and Seasonal Food from the Plains of Camdeboo

WINNER : BEST LOCAL COOKBOOK SOUTH AFRICA : GOURMAND WORLD COOKBOOK AWARDS

Published by Quivertree Publications, 2008, hardcover, illustrated, 220 pages, 20.8 cms x 26.6 cms x 2.8 cms, previous owner's name to endpaper & title page, otherwise condition; as new.

Ever since legendary South African author Eve Palmer brought the farm Cranemere to life in her book the Plains of Camdeboo, the magic of the Great Karoo has captured the hearts of thousands. Her legacy lives on in Prickly Pears and Pomegranates by Bernadette le Roux and Marianne Palmer. The recipes are accessible and comforting and stirs up all the nostalgia relating to the Karoo.

Bernadette le Roux is a food stylist and writer, currently employed as food editor at Condé Nast House & Garden. Based in Cape Town, she is part owner of the popular Café Roux in Noordhoek a family restaurant run with her husband Paul le Roux and his sister, Lindiwe le Roux. Bernadette is a fifth-generation Palmer, the daughter of Alex and Marianne Palmer, and spent her childhood on the now iconic farm Cranemere in the Great Karoo. She has been involved with magazines and food, in various roles and capacities, for the past 10 years. Her cookbook Prickly Pears & Pomegranates and Marmelade & Moerkoffie, co-authored with her mother Marianne, was chosen as best local cookbook in the world at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

Marianne Palmer is a self-taught cook with a wide culinary repertoire who has presented lectures, workshops and seminars on food. Marianne and her husband Alex Palmer have been living on the farm Cranemere in the Great Karoo for the past 35 years. The farm is a big draw among paleontologists and scientists, who frequently visit the site to view the world-renowned fossils in the Cranemere museum. If pre-arranged, they may be lucky enough to overnight and dine at Cranemere. A meal with Marianne promises superbly prepared food made with farm fresh vegetables from the garden and free-range meat from the veld. Marianne penned the well-received cookbook Prickly Pears & Pomegranates in collaboration with her daughter, Bernadette le Roux.
