In titling this catalogue of matchbox labels the word 'provisional' is used advisedly, since it would have been all but impossible to list all  that have been used since matches were first made in this country by Louis Rudolph in 1884.  At that period few people considered the humble matchbox or its label worthy of preservation, and consequently it is surprising that so many have found their way into collections.
