The management thinkers that make up the first section of this book, over 45 in total, consist of most of the world's most influential management gurus and writers, ranging from Peter Drucker to Tom Peters, Sun Tzu to Machievelli. Concise summaries of their lives, careers and impact provide the reader with details of their core thinking, contributions and achievements.

The second half of the book is given over to a highly selective gallery of some of the world's most effective business leaders and entrepreneurs. As with any list, it is as much distinguished by whom it omits as who is included. The aim has been to identify key figures in a range of industries who, by their own efforts, have changed the way business is conducted.

The list, it must be said, is dominated by US business personalities; but is also biased towards innovators in traditional, expanding and emerging markets, and reflects the global nature of business today.

As the editor notes, being 'nice' is not one of the main criteria for being selected for inclusion in this list of business leaders--but being effective is. However, it becomes immediately apparent that an indispensable ingredient of business success is simply good fortune.
