Common Name: Glue Plant, Gomvy This unusual mesemb succulent genus from South Africa and Namibia is unique in the fact that it is one of only two mesemb genera that collects sand on its leaves, even in cultivated plants. The leaves have a sticky cover which peels back like a scab, leaving behind a raw, shiny surface which then exudes more "glue" for the process to repeat itself. Psammophora species flower in winter and the scented flowers open at midday, closing by dusk. Psammophora longifolia is a branched dwarf succulent with clustered leaves that has blunt ends. It has 2cm wide white flowers. Propagation is not difficult from seed. Gravelly soils are recommended and watering must not be excessive. Keep dry during summer. These are best grown in pots.
