Psyche and Death by Edgar Herzog is a fascinating and influential study in analytical psychology that explores humanity's relationship with death through mythology, symbolism, folklore and dreams. Originally published in German as Psyche und Tod, this English translation was produced under the auspices of the C.G. Jung Institute of Zurich and the C.G. Jung Foundation, making it an important contribution to Jungian literature available to English-speaking readers.
Drawing extensively on Carl Gustav Jung's theories of the collective unconscious and archetypes, Herzog examines how death has been represented across cultures and throughout history. Psyche and Death analyses ancient myths, religious symbolism, dreams and recurring psychological motifs to demonstrate how images of death reveal profound truths about the human psyche. Rather than treating death solely as a biological event, Herzog presents it as a symbolic process closely connected with transformation, rebirth and psychological development.
The second half of the book focuses on dream analysis, illustrating how dreams involving death often represent stages of personal growth, emotional transition and individuation rather than literal mortality. This interdisciplinary approach combines psychology, anthropology, mythology and religion, making Psyche and Death valuable for Jungian analysts, psychologists, students of comparative religion and readers interested in symbolism and dream interpretation.
Although this copy is an ex-library example, it remains a solid reading and reference copy of a title that is not frequently encountered, particularly in South Africa. Psyche and Death represents an excellent opportunity for collectors of Jungian psychology and those seeking foundational works on archetypal symbolism, mythology and the psychology of death.
