A medium to large tree reaching heights of over 20 m., with a straightish stem and a rounded crown. The species is very variable in leaflet size and shape, which are the main characters for distinguishing the two subspecies. Brenan (1970) suggests that the range of variation in subspecies goetzei may be due to hybridization and introgression has occurred between subspecies microphylla and A. nigrescens. Both taxa occur in a wide range of wooded grassland and woodland types, on heavy soils but also on sandy alluvium.
