QSA with 5 clasps to 316 Tpr N W Smellie, Ceylon Mounted Infantry

After serving in South Africa during 1900, Trooper Norman William Smellie returned to his parents in Eastbourne. He died there in the last quarter of 1901.

His name is commemorated on a plaque at Highgate School in London and on the impressive Ceylon Contingent Memorial that was unveiled in 1907 along Kandy's lakeside Esplanade. In post-independence Sri Lanka, the statue became the focal point for student protests in the 1960’s and it was re-located to the Sri Lankan Army barracks at Kandy where it is secure behind a high wall.
