No games system would be complete in today's market without the inclusion of a first-person shooter, and hot on the heels of the PlayStation 2 launch comes Quake 3: Revolution. In the usual tradition of this genre, the player is transported into an ultra-violent world where they have to fight with whatever weapon is available to be that last man standing, or, as is the case with this game, hold a white flag the longest.
The Quake games have had a long-standing relationship with the PC user, dating back to their predecessors "Doom" and its sequels, and has by many gamers been considered to be some of the best first-person shooters on the platform. Now is the time, like many of its predecessors, for the PlayStation 2 to have a crack at the whip, and it copes with the job elegantly, hardly breaking a sweat.
The player is placed in a beautifully detailed arena with a bunch of nasty killers and has to survive as long as possible until he or she is the only survivor, or finds the flag and is able to hold it for one minute. It sounds simple, but it's anything but. With stunning graphics, amazing speed and stomach-churning sounds, this game looks good and plays well But it lacks the one element that makes the PC and Dreamcast versions of the game so good: online play. Having said that, it compensates with a four-player option--allowing up to four people to play on the same console in quad-screen action. Quake III is a PC shoot-'em-up legend, regarded by many first-person shooter fans as the king of the genre, the one with the best arenas, most heart-pounding frag-sessions and convincing computer-controlled enemy bots.
