ON AUCTION IS A ROCK CLUSTER WITH BEAUTIFUL QUARTZ CRYSTALS.
QUARTZ IS THE MOST COMMON MINERAL AT EARTH'S SURFACE, FOUND IN ROCKS LIKE GRANITE AND SANDSTONE. IT IS ALSO USED TO MAKE GLASS AND IS THE MAIN COMPONENT OF COMPUTER CHIPS. THE ANCIENT GREEKS BELIEVED THAT QUARTZ WAS ICE THAT HAD BEEN FROZEN SO HARD IT WOULD NEVER MELT. THEY CALLED IT "KRYSTALLOS," WHICH MEANS "ICE" IN GREEK, GIVING US THE WORD "CRYSTAL". PURE QUARTZ IS COLORLESS, BUT SMALL IMPURITIES CAN CAUSE IT TO APPEAR IN MANY DIFFERENT COLORS, SUCH AS PURPLE (AMETHYST), PINK, YELLOW, AND BLACK. THROUGHOUT HISTORY, QUARTZ HAS BEEN USED BY VARIOUS CULTURES FOR JEWELRY AND DECORATIONS. SOME GROUPS ALSO CONSIDERED IT A SACRED OR HEALING STONE. Quartz form crystal clusters with numerous individual crystals growing together from a common base or matrix. An ideal, unimpeded quartz crystal forms a six-sided prism with pyramid-like terminations at each end. In a cluster (or druse), crystals are attached to a base and typically only show one pointed termination.
In the 17th century, the scientist Nicolas Steno observed that the angle between the faces of quartz crystals was always exactly 60°, a groundbreaking discovery that paved the way for modern crystallography. The largest single quartz crystal ever documented was found in Brazil; it measured approximately 6.1 meters long and weighed over 40,000 kg.
