The document reads as follows:


Victoria, by the Grace Of God of the Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen Defender of the Faith, by these Presents Constitute and Appoint you, Johann Peterson, Gentleman, Lieutenant in the 1st Regt. of Light Infantry, Our British German Legion from the Twenty Fifth day of October 1855 - You are therefore during the continuance of the present War and for as long afterwards as We shall deem it expedient to continue your services carefully and diligently to discharge the Duty of Lieutenant by exercising and well disciplining both the inferior Officers and Soldiers in the said Regiment and We do hereby Command them to Obey you as their Lieutenant and you are to observe and follow such orders and directions from time to time as you shall receive from us or any of your superior Officers according to the Rules and Discipline of War in pursuance of the Trust hereby reposed in you. Given at the Court of WINDSOR, the Tenth day of April 1856 in the Nineteenth year of our Reign. BY HER MAJESTY'S COMMAND.
