The obverse of the coin features a bust of Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd, the Prime Minister of South Africa from 1958 until his assassination in 1966. The reverse features a springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa.

Later Changes:
From 1970 to 1990, the coin's size and composition were changed, becoming smaller and made of nickel.
