At first glance the plans are intimidating but once you start they begin to make increasingly more sense and are not really that difficult to understand. I made one minor change and rounded off the sharp point on the sides behind the "front seat" for safety reasons. Another warning: Being a novice I followed the plans carefully. There is a section showing where to pre-drill the holes in the pieces. I followed these carefully to get them exact but during assembly I discovered some of the holes were not in a usable location and had to redo them based on the actual fit. Check how the pieces will fit together before blindly drilling holes! The first change I made was to use MDF rather than the recommended plywood. While this resulted in a heavier product it was both cheaper and easier to work with. Another suggestion: drill some finger holes in the mattress base to make it easier to lift when in place. Making it in 2 pieces might also be convenient if you think you will want to use under the bed for storage. I used a latex enamel indoor/outdoor paint following priming except for the silver parts where I used an automotive spray paint. Also the main colour is yellow rather than red as was requested to match the décor. Again, this was a most enjoyable project and the reaction from my son made it all worthwhile.RACING CAR ..BED PLANS...BUILD IT YOURSELF
Any young child would be thrilled to sleep on this sleek red sports car bed. It features a useful book shelf and a hidden storage area. Bedtime will be a snap! (96" long x 44-1/2" wide x 32" tall)
If sleek cars and a fast track inspire your child or grandchild, imagine how they will speed off to sleep in this authentic-looking race car bed! And, you'll be surprised at how easy, and fun, the whole thing is to build!
Only three sheets of 3/4-inch plywood / MDF are required for the car's body, so expenses are kept to a minimum. Better still, only common tools are required, most notably; a saber saw, table or hand-held circular saw, and an electric drill. All parts fasten with the simple aid of some glue and drywall screws.
An interlocking design is used for the bed's five main components (two sides, front, back and base) so the bed can be assembled and disassembled in a matter of moments without the use of any special hardware. Two shelves at the head of the bed provide space for a radio, books and other favorite belongings.
Drawn to full-size, the pattern for the race car bed required numerous sheets of blueprint size paper (and hence a slightly higher cost than normal) so all you need to know would be summarized in one complete and easy to follow package. For the resulting ease of construction, the extra investment is well worthwhile.
Designed for a standard twin-size mattress, the bed's overall dimensions are four feet wide, eight feet long and 2-1/2 feet high (measured to the top of the spoiler).
