Nero Tondo Black Radish are medium to large-sized, round root vegetables, measuring anything from 7-15cm in diameter. They ground just beneath the ground and produce really tall leafy greens, which are also edible as young and tender salad mix, or cooked like spinach but are usually used to make pesto. The enlarged roots have dark charcoal gray to black skins with a coarse dry texture and bitter flavour. The bright white to cream-coloured flesh is pungent and has a firm and crisp texture. Nero Tondo Black Radish offers you a spicy flavour. The Nero Tondo Black Radish can be grown throughout the year and is most available during winter and early spring.
They are in the Brassica family, related to broccoli and kale, and are well-known for both their culinary and medicinal uses.
Nero Tondo radishes are slow to bolt in hot weather and are also very cold tolerant. Seeds can be sown in the fall to overwinter for a spring harvest or sow in spring for summer and fall harvests. For centuries, black radishes have been touted to have multiple healing properties for the liver and respiratory tract. The many health benefits of black radish include its ability to improve liver function, manage hormone levels, control blood pressure, lower cholesterol, boost skin and hair health, improve digestion, treat constipation and bloating, prevent scurvy, improve mental alertness, reduce gallstones, and detoxify the body.
The skin is edible, but if a milder taste is desired, it can be peeled before eating. Black radishes can also be roasted, braised, fried, and sauteed. When cooked, the roots can be mashed and mixed with cheeses or sour cream to make a dip for appetizer plates or spread over roasted meats. Radishes do need plenty of sun, so grow them in an area where they can get 6-8 hours of direct sunlight.
