Militaire Marsch voor het Artillerie Corps der Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (1875)
Very rare piece of ZAR artillery history from 1875, dedicated to ('Opgedragen aan Zijn Hoogedelen den Staats President der Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek Thomas Francois Burgers') and accompanied by a original carte de visite (ca 1875, Wegner & Mottu, Amsterdam-Utrecht) of Thomas Francois Burgers, 4th President of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek.

President Burgers set high ideals for the Republic and brought about vigorous reforms in the administration, in the judiciary, and in education. He considered a railway link with the port of Delagoa Bay as essential for the economic survival of the Republic, and from 1875-76 he was visited Europe (presumably when the photo was taken), attempting to raise money for a railroad loan and to publicize the Transvaal abroad.
The eventual establishment of the Transvaal State Artillery in 1881 represents the culmination of several attempts to create an orthodox European-style force to act as a core for the Burger commandos in the field. The Pretoria Rifle Corps, the Batterij Dingaan and various volunteer 'Schutzencorps' had all enjoyed a brief existence during the 1870's. The First Boer War emphasised the need for a more permanent and professional approach to the problem. The result was that, in 1881 (Wet No. 4, 1881), the restored South African Republic raised its own artillery (Artillerie-corps van de Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek, under command of Captain Barend Pelser) and mounted police (the Transvaalsche Rijdende Politie, under the command of Captain Ignatius Ferreira).
