An EXCELLENT example of a RARE, 1910 Union of South Africa Commemorative .925 Silver Medal w/ Silk Ribbon & Presentation Case. This piece appears to be in a XF+ state , with detailed Relief on obverse and reverse. All insignia present. Minimal Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. Toning can be noted - all detailing is clear & defined. Silk Ribbon is complete and colours remain vibrant. Gold-plated pin mount is intact with securing mechanism. Original issue Presentation Case is evident with King George V - Royal Cypher. NOTE : Brass Catch-Button has expired due to age / general handling.
In 1910 , King Edward VII - expressed the need to issue the Medal , that would commemorate the victory of peace and unity in South Africa. The award was issued by King George V - bearing the uncrowned bust of the Monarch , whilst the reverse displayed a figure of Mercury forging the links of a chain representing the 4 Provinces ( Natal, Orange Free State, Transvaal & Cape).
A total of : 580 Medals were struck , and awarded to Members of Parliament & Associated Figures who played a prominent role in Union ceremonies. Amongst the recipients were - General Jan Smuts & General Rt. Hon. Louis Botha PC.
