An EXCELLENT example of a Weimar Republic Era , German Hunting & Forestry- Hirschfänger Dagger w/ Clamshell & Scabbard. This piece appears to be in a VF state of preservation , with detailed Brass Relief fittings on obverse and reverse portions. All insignia/ embellishments present.Appropriate Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. Brass Hilt & guard fittings are intact and well mounted - NOTE: the original Stag-horn grip appears to have been replaced with a machine-turned wooden handle. The Steel Blade is in excellent condition- retaining a marginal cutting edge , white finish & exceptionally sharp spear point. Leather Scabbard is intact and stitching remains complete throughout construction.
This piece features the distinctive ' Red Felt Washer' remnants present at the Ricasso base - a characteristic of Inter-War period (1920-1935) Eickhorn blade production. The detailed ' Deer foot' Hilt and Clamshell guard are in good order - being complemented by the ' Acorn Pattern' retention boss placed on the Scabbard. It must be NOTED - that the remnants of a post - War varnish or chellac has been applied to certain segments of the piece concerned. No visible markings will be associated with the Blade due to Versailles Decree restrictions, notable amongst the Unmarked Carl Eickhorn daggers & bayonets.
The Hirschfänger, has a traditional design that can be traced back to the 14th Century ( 1300s ) in regions of Southern Germany, especially those located near the Black Forest ( Schwarzwald).
