TheTable Mountain Aerial Cableway
officially opened on 4 October 1929. Commemorative bronze and brass tokens (often referred to as medallions) were issued to mark the occasion and have since become scarce collectors' items. 
The 1929 Opening Token
While the official inauguration was on October 4th, many of these tokens incorrectly list the date as October 5th, 1929. 

    Obverse: Typically features a relief of Table Mountain with the cable car ascending. 
    Reverse: Contains various statistics from the time, including: 
        Cable Length: 4,000 feet.
        Ascent Time: 7 minutes.
        Heights: Lion's Head (2,182 ft), Devil's Peak (3,278 ft), and Maclear's Beacon (3,550 ft).

        Visibility: Distances to Robben Island (7 miles), Dassen Island (42 miles), and Saldanha Bay (65 miles).
    Variations: Early versions use Imperial units (feet/miles), while later commemorative issues use metric measurements (meters) and updated passenger capacities (e.g., 28 persons). 

Historical Context

    Inauguration: The ceremony was led by the Mayor of Cape Town, Reverend A.J.S. Lewis, and attended by over 200 guests. 
    First Cable Cars: Crafted from wood and steel with tin roofs, they carried 19 passengers and a conductor. 
    Engineering: Proposed by Norwegian engineer Trygve Stromsoe in 1926, the project cost approximately £60,000 to complete. 
    Founders: The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) was formed by Sir Alfred Hennessy, Sir David Graaff, and Sir Ernest Oppenheimer.
