Offered for sale is a rare and hard to find first edition plate from the Kruger Park commemorative wall plate series made by Wedgwood UK. This item dates to the late 1940's. The backstamp on the plate indicates was plate was made in the transitional period when the Wedgwood Factory was relocating to Barlaston from Etruria. The Wedgwood manufactory in Etruria closed in 1950. Wedgwood designed the plates in sets of four in four series depicting different animals from the Kruger Park (which was initially known as the Sabie Game Reserve ) This plate is a first edition from the 3rd series of animals. The plates remained in production until the early 1970's and at least 3 editions were produced of this popular range. The back of the plate includes various descriptions acknowledging that the borders of thorn trees and various flora/fauna in profile were designed by the wife of the Kruger Park warden/manager. Her name was Hilda Chomondeley and his name was James Stevenson Hamilton. The image of the Zebra is based on a photograph transcribed as an etching by the etching department at Wedgwood who prepared the decals/transfers for reproducing the images.
