HENRY N ABRAMS PUBLISHING: ABRAMS, FORMERLY HARRY N. ABRAMS, INC. (HNA), IS AN AMERICAN PUBLISHER OF ART AND OTHER ILLUSTRATED BOOKS. Founded by Harry N. Abrams in 1949, Abrams was the first company in the United States to specialize in the creation and distribution of art books. Times Mirror Company acquired the company in 1966 and Harry Abrams retired in 1977. In 1997 Abrams was acquired by La Martiniere from France who in turn was taken over in 2018 by French publisher Media-Participations. Run by president and CEO Mary McAveney, Abrams publishes and distributes approximately 250 titles annually and has more than 3,000 titles in print. BEAVERBROOK NEWSPAPERS LTD: One of the largest newspaper monopolies in Great Britain. Beaverbrook Newspapers Ltd. was created in the 1910s and 1920s by Lord Beaverbrook. In the later half of the twentieth century Beaverbrook built up the largest and most influential media empire in Britain. Max Aitken (his son) also became one of the richest men in the world and amassed a large art collection, specializing in the works of British artists. In the mid 1950s he conceived the idea of building an art gallery in Fredericton to house many of his best pieces, donating 300 of his works to establish the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. It opened in 1959 and displayed some of the worlds most famous art pieces.
