Gouda PZH Plateelbakkerij ceramic wall plate commissioned to commemorate the Jan Van Riebeeck festival held in the Cape in April 1953, the occasion being the Tercentenary of the arrival of Jan Van Riebeeck and his family in the Cape on 6 April 1652 on contract to the Dutch East India Company to establish a support base for Dutch ships and sailors to provide replenishment, fresh produce, meat and medical assistance. The design of the wall plate is by famous South African artist WH Coetzer, like Pierneef an artist strongly associated with the Afrikaner Nationalist movement . The back of the plate has a silver foil/paper sticker which details the intricate symbolism incorporated into the design including the dates commemorated, the design of the first forts at the Cape, The Dromadaris ship which transported Van Riebeeck, Gables, distinctive architectural features of Cape Dutch dwellings, acorn trees planted in the Cape , the VOC monogram of the Dutch East India company etc.
