An EXCELLENT example of a RARE , 1963 SA Comrades Marathon .925 Silver Medal Inscribed. This piece appears to be in a XF state , with detailed Relief on obverse and reverse. All insignia present. Minimal Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. Surface Toning evident. Inscription legible and reverse features all necessary Silver Hallmarks. Suspender ring is intact.
The Comrades Marathon was initiated in 1921 , by veterans of the Great War (1914-18) in order to commemorate the sacrifices of their fallen brethren. This piece was awarded for the Pietermaritzburg to Durban race - in which 143 Silver Medals were awarded. The 1963 Race featured only 149 successful competitors completing within the required time limit.
