The Republic of Biafra was established in 1967 when Eastern Nigeria seceded from the federal government due to ethnic tensions and violence. Biafra existed as an independent state for almost three years, minting its own currency, designing national symbols, and fighting a civil war for recognition and survival.
This note is part of that historical era issued by the Bank of Biafra to serve its economy during the blockade. Because of the war and the eventual reintegration of Biafra into Nigeria in 1970, very few notes survived in uncirculated condition.
