An EXCELLENT example of a RARE , 1971 South African Sports Merit Award .925 Silver Medallion w/ Ribbon & Presentation Case. This piece appears to be in a XF+ state , with detailed Relief on obverse and reverse. All insignia present. Minimal Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. Enamel inlay is complete and all nomenclature is legible. Medallion will display some degree of toning and retains all necessary SA Mint & Silver Hallmarks at rear. Retention shank is complete and reverse clearly displays the Recipient Name & Sporting Category in Afrikaans.
This Medallion is a sought after - 1971 ' First Year of Issue' variant and features the original Full-Length 52 cm long tri-colour neck Ribbon. All hook fasteners are intact and materials are in good order. The Blue Presentation Case is complete with internal divider and cushioned liner inlay.
This Decoration, was instituted in 1971 - and was only awarded to South African citizens( Sportsmen & women) for recognition in competitive Sporting events within the Republic. The award was also made eligible for Coaches / Administrators/ Officials whose efforts in support of SA Sportsmen & Sportswomen had resulted in National or International success. This Decoration was awarded in both Bronze & Silver - the Silver being for individual Sportsmen & Sportswomen - as well as - associated Support Personnel who were members of National Sport Controlling Bodies with at least 7 affiliated provincial, regional associations.
