LDDS originally stood for "Long Distance Discount
Service" and was formed in 1983 in Mississippi -
USA. It grew to one of the largest telecommunications
companies in the world and dropped the name LDDS
to just become "WorldCom" in the 1990's. (It was the
2nd largest telecom company in the USA - just behind
AT&T). Then it bought a bunch of smaller telecom
companies. In 2003 it merged with MCI, and in 2006
it was bought for $7.6 Billion USD by Verizon (symbol
VZ on the New York Stock Exchange). They all were
also merged with NYNEX, GTE and Bell Atlantic
(major phone companies in the USA). Now it has
over 235,000 employees and revenue of almost $100.
