RARE - 19TH CENTURY ROYAL ARTILLERY OFFICERS SWORD

IN GREAT OVERALL CONDITION, STILL FIRM AND FULLY INTACT - SHOWING SOME NATURAL PATINA AND WEAR - HAS NOT BEEN CLEANED

MEASURES JUST OVER A METER LONG, BLADE AND SCABBARD

"A British officer's sword bearing the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" on one side and "Artillery" and associated insignia on the other. This is a 19th-century Royal Artillery officer's sword, often based on the 1821 or 1845/1854 patterns.

  • The Motto: "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Anglo-Norman for "Shame on him who thinks evil of it") is the motto of the Order of the Garter. It appears on the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom and is used by elite British regiments and corps.
  • Artillery Association: The "Artillery" marking combined with this motto is characteristic of the Royal Artillery (or Royal Horse Artillery). The blade is usually etched with the Royal Arms (which includes the garter motto), the Queen's/King's Crown, the "Ubique" scroll, and "Royal Artillery" or a winged bomb insignia.
  • Blade and Pattern: These swords were typically carried during the 19th century and into WWI. They are generally of the 1821 pattern (often called the Light Cavalry/Artillery pattern) or the 1854 pattern, which featured a slightly curved blade with an etched, polished finish.
  • Maker: These were frequently produced by notable sword cutlers like Wilkinson Sword

The combination indicates a ceremonial or service sword for a high-ranking artillery officer, designed to showcase both loyalty to the Crown (via the Order of the Garter motto) and unit identity"
