TITLED ORBIS TERRARUM TYPUS DE INTEGRO MULTIS IN LOCIS EMENDATUS WHICH FROM LATIN TRANSCRIBES ROUGHLY AS THE MAP OF WHOLE WORLD HAS BEEN IMPROVED IN MANY PLACES. PRODUCED BY THE FAMOUS DUTCH CARTOGRAPHER CLAUS JANSZ VISSCHER.

SIZE FRAME: 73CM WIDE 62CM HIGH EDITION: Its is a 4th Edition (the firstedition had 1637 in cartouche)
Nicolas Visschers Twin Hemisphere World Map is regarded as the forerunner of a number of highly decorative Dutch world maps produced throughout the latter part of the 17th & early 18th centuries and is one of the most sought-after maps of the era. The map is richly decorated with clipper ships and sea monsters in the oceans.
THIS IS AN UNIQUELY HAND COLOURED LINEENGRAVING: It is a hand coloured engraving making each map unique. Looking at similar maps online you will notice each region coloured differently and sometimes in a different colour.
Visscher created two world maps in 1637-39, one was double-hemispherical. IT IS INSCRIBED WITH HIS LATINISED NAME, N.I. PISACTORE IN TOP RIGHT CORNER. This two hemispherical map was engraved by Pieter Goos.
CALIFORNIA IS DEPICTED AS AN ISLAND. Among the many features of early 17th century charts is the still obscure west coast of the North American continent. Here California is represented in its incorrect island form rather than as part of the peninsula.
ANTARCTICA STILL UNKNOWN: The new Dutch discoveries on the coast of Australia are shown, and the faint outline of Terra Australis Incognita (Unknown Southern Land today known as Antarctica) is still in evidence. Ptolemy, a geographer in ancient times, had suggested that there was one huge continent in the south of the world. 1500 years later mapmakers were still putting this imaginary super-continent on their maps.
DATES OF AMERICAS DISCOVERY IN ERROR: On Visscher's map the large cartouche west of South America mistakenly identifies the dates of Christopher Columbus' and Amerigo Vespucci's discoveries of America as a 100 years later. Explorer Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) is known for his 1492 'discovery' of the 'new world' of the Americas on board his ship Santa Maria. Visscher has the date as 1592. Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512) was an Italian navigator who made at least two voyages to the Americas, the first time in 1499. He was probably the first to realize that a new continent had been discovered that was not just the coast of Asia. America gets its name from Amerigo Vespucci. Visscher has the date as 1599.
ILLUSTRATIONS OF COSTUMES: Surrounding the hemispheres are twelve panels illustrating paired figures from various nations (Hispani - Galli - Itali -Germani - Angli - Belgae - Groenlandi - Chinenses - Javani - Guineenses - Peruuiani - Magellanici.), four panels containing vignettes of the four seasons (VER / SPRING AESTAS /SUMMER HYEMS / WINTER AUTUMNUS / AUTUMN), and four panels depicting the elements (TERRA / EARTH AQUA / WATER AER / AIR ANDIGNIS / FIRE). Tucked between the hemispheres are two celestial spheres with graphic illustrations of the constellations circling the north pole and south pole. THE ELABORATE ARTISTRY AND INTERESTING GEOGRAPHICAL DETAIL MAKE THIS AVERY DESIRABLE MAP.
