Rare antique cast iron East London street name sign. I would date this old street name sign to the early 1900s. These old cast iron signs would have been used to the 1950s, when they would have been replaced by aluminium signs. The sign has embossed letters that were enameled black against a white enamel background. The sign would have been affixed to one of the old decorative cast iron poles by 2 central holes and one on either side. It measures 68cm x 11cm, and is very heavy weighing 4.6kg. The sign is still solid, but the paint has flaked due to surface rust - as could be expected with East London being a coastal city. This however adds to its character. Great buy - such signs are very rarely found.
