Rare antique Rafael Tuck Ushers Whisky Boer War match holder/ striker. This antique Boer War match holder dates to about 1900. According to the Andrew Usher & Co Whisky Distillers website, it was a promotional item made during the Anglo-Boer war. It was regarded as a patriotic matchstriker advertising Ushers OVG whisky, depicting a heroic wounded British Boer war soldier, standing with fixed bayonet, wounded to head, helmet at his feet, defiantly working the bolt of his Lee Metford rifle, entitled "A Gentleman in Kharki" by reknowned artist A Canton Woodville. It also has the poem "The Absent Minded Beggar" by Rudyard Kipling on it. It is manufactured from stoneware, and measures 6,5cm (h) x 9cm (diameter). It is in good condition for its age - no chips or cracks, and little wear to the print. Great buy for the collector od Boer War memorabilia.
