Antique SA Hut Tax Token. Early 1900's.
Hut tax tokens were brass or metal tokens used in early 20th-century Southern Africa, particularly South Africa and Rhodesia, as receipts for taxes paid on dwellings. Issued by colonial authorities like the British South Africa Company (BSAC), they validated that the 10-14 shilling tax per hut was paid, coercing local communities into the cash economy.
