RARE antique Victorian (c1880) 4-drawer davenport (ship's captain desk) with a leather top

This extremely beautiful antique Victorian (c.1870) ship captain's desk / davenport is absolutely awesome and in great condition for its age!!! The desk features a red leather top as well as awesome carvings on the curved support. The davenport has four drawers on the one side as well as a compartment on top of the davenport and a section for writing instruments etc. The size of the davenport is approximately 61cm x 62cm x 88cm high. These desks are very rare. Please note that there is some (expected) age related wear and tear - most notably the bit of damage to the leather on top. A davenport desk is a type of small case desk, with a slanted and/or pull-out top and a row of drawers down one or both sides; some have one side of working drawers and one side of faux drawers. Many also have small front drawers, cubbyholes, hidden compartments or pop-up galleries. The davenport dates from the 1790's, developed by a British furniture-making firm named Gillows. Its name derives from the client it was made for, a Captain Davenport. Because of this military connection, and the desk's compact size and multiple compartments, furniture historians theorise the piece was originally intended to be used on-board a ship, or on military campaigns. However, the davenport became popular on dry land and in homes throughout England and the united states during the 19th century.
