Rare Boer War Cape Garrison Artillery and Engineer Volunteer Corps Belt Buckle.
A fine scarce Victorian die-stamped and seeded rectangular belt buckle. To the top Queen Victoria Crown (QVC). To the centre the Garter Proper and Royal Arms within sprays of thistles. To the bottom "GA&EV". The centre displays some rubbing. Loop and clasp intact. Overall condition good for age and purpose.
Originally raised on 6th August 1859 as the "Cape Volunteer Sappers and Miners", the unit evolved through several iterations including the "Cape Town Volunteer Engineers" (1879) before becoming the "Garrison Artillery and Engineer Volunteer Corps" in 1891. The unit was tasked with defending the Cape Peninsula, specifically manning coastal batteries, including Fort Wynyard. In 1896, the Engineer component was disbanded and the unit was re-designated as the Cape Garrison Artillery. The unit was mobilized and served actively during the Anglo Boer War.
