An EXCELLENT example of a RARE, Boer War Cape Government Railways Large Brass Padlock w/ Lanyard & Key. This piece appears to be in a VF + state of preservation, with detailed Relief on obverse. All insignia present. Appropriate Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. Toning will be noted - due to age and utilisation. All necessary Government & Military Nomenclature/ Acceptance markings are visible and legible. The Lock casement is complete with the securing bale intact. Internal mechanism is in good order , engaging well when Key is turned- allowing for opening and closure. Original Brass retention Lanyard is intact and securely attached to Padlock.
NOTE: THE SECURING KEY - IS A MODERN 20TU CENTURY REPLACEMENT , YET FUNCTIONS AS INTENDED.
This piece would have been utilised by members of the Cape Government Railways , formed in 1874 - and requisitioned for service in 1899 during the Second Anglo-Boer War. The C.G.R and personnel- facilitated the efficient transport of British Troops and necessary supplies throughout the Conflict - allowing for ease of movement and eventual success for Imperial Forces.
