An EXCELLENT example of a Border War Era, 1979 SADF Special Forces ' 4 Recce' Commando Proposed Unit Escutcheon. This piece appears to be in a VF/F state of preservation , with detailed Graphic Relief on obverse. All insignia present. Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. Toning / discoloration may be noted throughout. This item is a multi-piece construction format , with assembled segments.
This piece would have been privately commissioned by a member of the Unit - during the process of Insignia approval. The displayed Unit Badge was proposed- but ultimately not adopted for usage.
The Unit, 4 Reconnaissance Commando - was formed in July 1978 and was based at Langebaan in the Western Cape. This formation , specialized in amphibious operations & qualified operators from the Unit were often deployed to Angola & Moçambique.
