Offered for sale is a highly collectible Mid century modern earthenware/ceramic carafe designed by Giovanni DeSimone for his own studio/manufactory based in Palermo Sicily. This item probably dates to the 1960's or slightly before. Giovanni Desimone established his ceramic company shortly after the second world war in Palermo. He trained as a ceramic designer in Faenza and was influenced by the major European fine artists of the early and mid 20th Century including Picasso and Matisse as well as incorporating folk art influences from his native Sicily particularly the bright and colourful palette and faux naive style of decorating. This carafe is hand modelled , made from an off white/ buff coloured clay and glazed in a white tin glaze with a hand painted motif of a rooster scrolling around the body of the pitcher. The base is signed with a hand painted inscription in black oxide which reads DeSimone Italy . Giovanni DeSimone retired in the early 1970's. His daughters subsequently continued managing the company and its ceramic designs/output. A price comparison on the net shows similar items for sale at around 300-400 US dollars or the equivalent in Euros. DeSimone ceramics were exported to America in the 1950's/60's and have a strong following in the United States. Size : 21.5cm high; 15cm wide at the base ;13.5cm measured at the shoulder of the carafe from the handle to the short pouring spout.
