Offered for sale is a rare Dutch Art Deco ceramic/earthenware figurine designed by Cris Agterberg and manufactured by Schoonhoven circa 19127-30. This is a sleek modernist and restrained creation unusual in its styling with softly rounded contours throughout. It is a slip cast , hollow cast earthenware figure glazed in an off white satin finished glaze which is soft to the touch and resembles marble or molten wax. To my eye the figurine is strongly reminiscent of Rodin's marble sculptures depicting human forms /figures which seem to emerge organically from the blocks of stone, such as the famous sculpture of Miss Fairfax in the Johannesburg Art Museum. The figurine is 27.8cm high ; it is not signed.
For a price comparison a copy of this figurine was sold for 385 euros by Botterweg Auctions in Amsterdam in Oct 2012.
Postage is R80 for Sapo delivery or R150 for courier delivery ; alternatively collection is welcome in Emmerantia Jhb.
