An EXCELLENT example of RARE , 1980s New Zealand Special Air Service Patt.44 Embroidered Parachute Wing & Title Pair. This set appears to be in a VF+ state , with detailed Graphic Relief on obverse. All insignia present. Minimal Evidence of handling/ age-related wear is visible on surface. All embroidery appears complete and detailed. Felt material for both pieces is intact- and retains correct reinforced panels at rear. Pigmentation is good , with little to no signs of fading.
This issue set , comprises of the Pattern 1944 - variant of the S.A.S Parachute Qualification Wing; that displays the correct stitch scheme and reinforced internal padding. Included as well - is the Maroon stitched shoulder title bearing the S.A.S lettering. The Pattern 44 Insignia set was requested in 1979 , by the New Zealand Defence Force - directly from the War Department in Britain , in order to serve as the basis for their Unit's chosen Insignia. This request was granted and an original proof set was sent - in order to provide a job-card copy.
The S.A.S was formed during World War II - by Major David Stirling, in order to form a Unit tasked with covert & clandestine combat operations. The Regiment, serves as the predecessor of all Modern Elite & Special Forces units around the world.
