Rare French 'Froment Meurice' Silver & Crystal Antique Scent Bottle (C.1870)
This very rare and wonderful, French antique silver gilt and rock crystal scent bottle, is, I'm convinced made by the rare and very sort after French silversmiths and jewellers 'Froment Meurice' in Paris. It has an amazing, beautifully decorated, in relief, solid silver hinged lid and mount featuring three small putti or cherubs, one holding a 'world globe with compass', one with a 'hammer & chisel' and another 'writing in a book', all in fine detail. The top of the domed lid is decorated with acanthus and numerous flowers with open work twines around the shoulders of the bottle, which has a tapering, baluster shaped rock crystal body, beautifully cut with eight long panels and comes complete with its original small crystal stopper. This special piece is in excellent condition with its original gilding and is stamped with two small hallmarks, one of which is diamond shaped, with what appears to be the letters 'F M'. After much research and compering this scent bottle with others done by this famous silversmith and similarities with the hallmark, I'm sure it's one of his pieces made around the 1860/70's. It measures 13cm in length x 3,5cm x 2,5cm and weighs 103g.
