This is the scarcer base fuze type shell for the German 3.7 cm Maschinenkanone M97 (a license built version of the Vickers Maxim Pom-pom).

First one I have seen in SA. They are normally seen on late war casings (1917/1918), but this one came with a 1902 dated German Imperial Navy casing, so probably from German South West or possibly German East Africa.. 

The shell and projectile are empty and inert. Note cracked neck on shell and drilled out primer.
